CAROLINE GAO: PRIVATE FLUTE INSTRUCTOR

Flute aesthetic

MEET CAROLINE

I am a fervent believer in the power of classical music to connect people, spark joy, and change lives. This passion began when I picked up a flute for the first time five years ago. Since then, I've become the principal flutist in West Albany High School's Wind Ensemble and Pit Orchestra. Currently, I am studying with Dr. Jill Pauls, a flute instructor at the University of Oregon; I have previously also studied with  Dr. Emily Stanek and Sage Gustafson. My flute experience includes the following:

  • United States Air Force Band Duet Initiative, 2020

  • Greater Portland Flute Society Young Artist Competition: 2nd place, 2019

  • District 11 Solo & Ensemble Festival: 3rd place solo flute, 3rd place large woodwind ensemble

  • Portland Youth Conservatory Orchestra, 2019-2020

  • Salem Youth Symphony, 2020-present

  • Oregon All-State High School Wind Ensemble, 2020

  • Western International Band Clinic Firebird Ensemble, 2020

  • Woodwinds at Wallowa Lake Band Camp, 2017-2019

  • Accepted to Interlochen Arts Advanced Flute Institute (deferred due to COVID-19)

Now, as a high school student, I am eager to share my musical knowledge and love for the flute with beginning to intermediate students.

LESSONS OFFERED

Lessons are available in the Albany, Oregon, area for middle and elementary school students.

ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Learning to play the flute and read sheet music for the first time is one of the most exciting, rewarding experiences of one's life. However, without individual guidance, it can be all too easy for first-time flutists to develop incorrect technique and bad habits. With beginning students, my primary goal is to develop the fundamental skills of tone, proper posture, rhythm, and basic music literacy.

DEVELOPING STUDENTS

Students who already know the fundamentals of flute-playing but want to progress further at a faster pace should seek a private instructor. Ensemble teachers often can't spend as much time on individual students once the basics of the instrument are learned. I, as a private instructor, will help introduce you to new musical terms, notes, and styles, many of which are specific to the flute and may not be encountered in ensemble playing.

INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

For students who have been playing for one to two years, new musical goals should be set. Once the basics of tone and breath control have been mastered, my intermediate students will work on memorizing their scales and arpeggios, improving sight-reading and musical expression, and playing music of different musical eras and increased difficulty. Audition and performance preparation can also be provided as necessary.
